How to Generate Test Data With Story Epics

This lesson will show what steps need to be taken to generate test data using a Story Epic.

Please note that Story Epics require many files to be downloaded to a user’s local computer. G-Repository and G-Repository Client can be used to ensure users always have the most up-to-date files to generate their test data.

This is critical when using Stories and Story Epics. A missing file or one that is out-of-date, can prevent a user from being able to generate their test data.

For this example, the added Story Epic contains two Stories. Each Story uses a Scenario Chain and Test Data Case to generate test data. The Test Data Cases belong to the same suite. This means we will need to download the following:

  • Two Scenario Chains
  • One Test Data Case Suite
  • One Story Epic

Step 1: Download each Scenario, Scenario Chain, and Scenario Chain Set

Within the Project Dashboard, click on the Download (Cloud) icon within the appropriate pane to download each Scenario, Scenario Chain, and Scenario Chain Set.

Step 2: Download each Test Data Case Suite

Within the G-Cases Management Dashboard, click on the Download (Cloud) icon for each Test Data Case Suite.

Step 3: Download the Story Epic

Within the G-Epics Management Dashboard, click on the Download (Cloud) icon for each Story Epic.

Step 4: Copy the Command Line within the G-Epics Management Dashboard

Select the appropriate Story Epic and then copy the command at the bottom of the dashboard.

Step 5: Open a Command Prompt or Terminal Window

Open a Command Prompt or Terminal window. Make certain the directory path matches the path used for the resource.home.directory Organization Resource within the web platform.

Step 6: Run the Command

Paste the command into the Command Prompt or Terminal window and then press the Enter key.

Sample Output

For this example, six delimited files were generated (one for each Domain).

The number of records generated depends on the applied Test Data Case for each Story. For the first Story in the Epic, the following Test Data Case was applied:

The following output files were generated for the Organization, Department, and User Domains based on the above Test Data Case.
